- Firstly, you need to measure the height of your shower door, this is particularly important in homes with low or sloping ceilings. This is also where you might need some help holding the tape measure. The average shower door tends to be around 1800- 2000mm in height. If your measurements are lower than this, it’s best to consult a professional as they may have to source a custom-made door.
- Measuring the width of the shower door is your next task. It’s best to take this measurement at the top, middle and bottom of the door to ensure it’s the same width. This is a good idea if your walls aren’t completely straight.
- Once you’ve measured the width, take note of all three widths if they are different. If you are creating a new shower enclosure, you may find the width will dictate the type of shower door you can install. For example, if the space is particularly narrow, a sliding shower door is likely out of the question, but a hinged or bifold door might be more suited.
- You now need to check if your walls are straight, as this could affect the type of shower door you need. Using a spirit level, again ideally in three places on your wall, top, middle, and bottom.
- If you are measuring a current shower door rather than an open space, it’s also a good idea to measure the door opening space. This is when you should ask yourself, does your current shower door provide enough space to get in and out and whether it’s obstructing other items such as a vanity unit or toilet?
- Lastly, it’s a good idea to double or even triple-check your measurements. Once you’re confident with your measurements you can now start browsing shower doors to find the best option for your space and needs.
